Veneers & Shaved Teeth in 2026
Real veneers shave only 0.3-0.5mm of enamel — about a fingernail's thickness — and no-prep veneers remove 0mm. The tiny "shark tooth" stubs you see online are crowns, where 2-3mm (60-70%) of the tooth is ground away. Once enamel is gone it never grows back, so knowing the difference is the most important research you can do.

The enamel-removal scale (2026)
Dentists remove enamel to make room for porcelain so the result doesn't look bulky — but "a little" and "a lot" are worlds apart. The ranges below pair each prep level with its typical per-tooth cost, reconciled from ADA, FAIR Health and published 2024-2026 fee data.

How much is removed at each level
| Prep type | Enamel removed | Appearance | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| No-prep (Lumineers) | 0% (none) | Can look bulky; porcelain sits on top | Yes |
| Minimal-prep veneer | 0.3 – 0.5mm (a fingernail) | Natural; porcelain replaces shaved enamel | No (enamel gone) |
| Full crown ("shark tooth") | 2 – 3mm (60-70% of tooth) | Ground to a peg or stump | No (tooth mutilated) |
- No-prep veneers keep the tooth intact, so they are reversible — but they only suit teeth that aren't already large or protruding.
- Minimal-prep veneers are the cosmetic gold standard: a thin shave for a natural profile, with the underlying tooth left strong. Not reversible, but conservative.
- Full crowns remove most of the tooth. Justified for a broken-down or root-canalled tooth — almost never for a healthy one purely for looks.
Why the "shark tooth" look is dangerous
When you see influencers fly abroad for "veneers" and return with rows of pegs, they were sold crowns. Aggressive dentists choose this because it is easier — grinding a tooth to a nub and capping it is faster than aligning a thin veneer, and a heavily reduced tooth retains a cap even with sloppy prep. The price you pay is biological: a healthy tooth is reduced to a stump, the nerve sits close to the surface, and the tooth can become sensitive and eventually die. Roughly one in five heavily prepped teeth needs a root canal within a decade.
What to expect in the chair
| Stage | Veneer prep | Crown prep ("shark tooth") |
|---|---|---|
| Anesthesia | Light local | Heavy local |
| Tool | Sanding disc / fine bur | Diamond bur / grinder |
| Feeling | Vibration | Heavy pressure |
| Afterward | Sensitive to cold ~2 weeks | Sore gums, aching jaw |
| Temporaries | Look normal (acrylic) | Look like connected blocks |
Protect yourself: the mock-up test
Before anyone touches a drill:
- Ask for a mock-up. The dentist places temporary plastic over your teeth — no drilling — so you can preview the shape and size.
- Ask the key question. "Will you be breaking the contact points between my teeth?" Breaking contact points signals aggressive prep heading toward crowns.
- Insist on minimal-prep e.max veneers for a cosmetic case on healthy teeth. If a dentist pushes full crowns because they're "stronger," get a second opinion. Unless a tooth is already broken down or decayed, a healthy tooth should never be crowned for vanity.
Insurance and financing
Cosmetic veneers (CDT D2962) are almost always denied by dental insurance, and HSA/FSA dollars generally can't be used for purely cosmetic work. The exception is a tooth damaged by trauma, where a crown code may be covered instead. Most patients finance through a 0% healthcare card over 12-24 months.
